Florida's Volusia County is known as the "shark bite capital of the world." The area is a hot spot for shark attacks, especially on September afternoons, per the ISAF. Data from the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File (ISAF), which describes itself as "the world's only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks," shows that Florida is the global leader in shark attacks, with 259 from 2012 to 2021, well ahead of Australia in second place. But it is in Volusia County — which includes the renowned Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach — on Florida's east coast that has been dubbed the "shark bite capital of the world." Late one night in October 2018, Max Ujdak and Katie Wall — now Katie Ujdak — were sitting in front of a computer, staring at the website for the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic church at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and a popular wedding venue. At midnight, the couple would be able to submit a digital form ranking their wedding date preferences for a ceremony at the Basilica, where reservations open on a two-year rolling calendar. The two were hoping for a 3 p.m. slot on Oct. 24, 2020. They submitted the form when the clock struck midnight, and sometime later, they received a confirmation from the church for their preferred date, with a 1 p.m. slot. “We’re like, OK, now we have a wedding venue, but we’re not engaged,” Ms. Ujdak, 27, said.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain, July 27 (Reuters) - Firefighters have "stabilised" a wildfire that ravaged 400 hectares of woodland in the centre of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, local emergency services chief Federico Grillo said on Thursday. Three roads were closed off while emergency services deployed nine aircraft and 250 firefighters to contain the blaze. "Unfortunately, a house has burned down on Pico de las Nieves," Grillo said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Earlier in July, 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes on the island of La Palma, near Gran Canaria, as a forest fire burned out of control while countries across Europe have struggled to cope with wildfires amidst a heatwave. TEJEDA, Spain, July 25 (Reuters) - A rapidly-spreading wildfire that broke out at the centre of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria on Tuesday forced the authorities to remove several hundred villagers from their homes, shut three roads and deploy helicopters to contain the blaze. However, Spanish airports operator AENA told Reuters, however, the Gran Canaria airport on the eastern coast was operating normally. Antonio Morales, head of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, told reporters about 100 firefighters and nine aircraft were working to put out the blaze that has so far burned through 200 hectares of forest but no buildings have been harmed. "They told me they were already there trying to put the fire out but two hours later it broke out of control," he said. It's just always bugged me but I was really proud of the way that I struck the ball today. Few of the thousands huddled under a sea of umbrellas would have tipped world number 26 Harman to win before the tournament. Likewise, Young, Rahm, Day and England's Tommy Fleetwood were all unable to hole the putts that would have at least asked some questions of Harman's nerve. But not even a Merseyside monsoon could rain on Harman's parade as he enjoyed a victory march down the last. The effort to postpone the start has been led by nations including Costa Rica, Chile and France. The three nations urged other countries that are members of the Seabed Authority’s governing council to agree that no permit authorizing mining in international waters should be granted until regulations are finalized. “We are on the side of the ocean,” said Gina Guillén Grillo, Costa Rica’s representative to the Seabed Authority who has helped lead the opposition to seabed mining. While the Seabed Authority continues its work to determine environmental standards, as well as a royalty rate that will be paid by the mining contractors, among other matters, the Metals Company will continue to lobby other nations, Mr. Barron said. The Metals Company and Nauru, along with the delegation from China, which also has been aggressively pursuing seabed mining, pushed unsuccessfully at last week’s meeting for the Seabed Authority to set a goal of finalizing the regulations by 2024.

He’s in uncharted waters, but seeing his name atop the leaderboard was not surprising to Lamprecht. The successive heat waves that have scorched Italy and the rest of southern Europe over the past week have forced those who can afford it to seek shelter in air-conditioned homes and offices or at seaside retreats. But for many seniors, heat has become the new Covid. She visits Ms. Grillo once a week to help her with daily chores and assist with medical appointments and legal problems. As temperatures rise, the threat to Europe’s elderly is now widespread, with southern European nations being joined by others as far north as Belgium in putting heat plans in place, many aimed at safeguarding older populations. For Italy, the extreme heat has forged a pincer with the country’s most pressing demographic trend — an aging population — to present an especially acute crisis.

Men Are Baring Midriffs in Crop Tops

As men have embraced shorter shorts over the past few years, some have also started to wear shorter shirts — specifically, crop tops. Though men have been known to wear stomach-baring garments when they exercise or go to the beach, lately crop tops can be seen on guys at stores and bars. Some wearers are making theirs by taking scissors to old T-shirts; others buy them off the rack, often from stores’ women’s sections. David Mendoza, 29, an operations manager in New York, owns crop tops of varying lengths. “If I’m wearing one just to go out casually, the crop top will be mid- to long length,” Mr. Mendoza said.

Berlusconi invented the entrepreneur as politician

Though his Forza Italia party and business empire are already weakened and unlikely to regain much prominence after his death, his unorthodox political methods spawned imitators across the West. Italy’s four-time and longest-serving prime minister, who often quipped he would live until 120, passed away on Monday. Ex-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also became popular by portraying himself as an eccentric outsider. As Italy’s traditional parties collapsed under countless graft charges in the 1990s, he used his media popularity and image as a can-do entrepreneur to exploit Italy’s political void. On June 1, the New York Botanical Garden hosted its annual Conservatory Ball. After cocktails, attendees made their way into the conservatory for dinner and dancing. CNN —It’s been a while since Emiliano Grillo has been able to lift a trophy in celebration on the PGA Tour. Eventually, after the ball had traveled approximately 100 yards before stopping against a rock, Grillo was able to take a drop. Despite the near disaster, Grillo was able rally in the end, birdieing the second hole of the playoff to claim his first PGA Tour win since October 2015. Afterwards, Grillo explained his emotions and thought process during the agonizing wait when the ball was trickling downstream. This year, though, Grillo won $1.566 million for his efforts, fending off stiff challenges from Schenk, Scottie Scheffler and Harry Hall to win his second PGA Tour win.

About two hours after Century 21 reopened as Century 21 NYC in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, the store’s point-of-sale system crashed. “This goes to show you that they should have never went out of business,” said Denise Danny, 58, from Staten Island. Ms. Danny, who had a shopping cart full of clothes, was standing in a line that had formed at a register on the department store’s second floor. At the time, Century 21 had 13 locations in four states. But arguably, none was as popular as its flagship location on Cortlandt Street in the Financial District, which was opened in 1961 by two cousins, Al Gindi and Samuel Gindi, who was known as Sonny.

When I described the midthigh-length dress I wore a few years ago for my job interview at The Times, the chatbot was not impressed. A 21-year-old woman should wear a statement dress, like a sequined mini, to her birthday party, it said. Was it appropriate to wear a white dress to a wedding as part of the wedding party, something I did a few months ago? It suggested that if I really wanted to wear white, I should check with the bride to see if it would be OK. Which, had I asked this question before the wedding, would have been tricky — there were no brides at this particular wedding, just grooms.
